Action Film Openings
Hey there bloggers! Welcome back to another blog post about my portfolio project. Today I’m going to be discussing 3 film openings of the genre “Action”, which ended up being the genre that I choose for this project. As I said before, action is a high energy genre, and many times it includes scenes where an important character fights for their life.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
One of the film openings that I’m going to be discussing, is the opening of “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022). The film starts with a black screen that gives a bit of background information, with white text on a black screen, and then there’s a change of “slide” to show the film tittle. After that, there is planes taking off and landing in a boat in the middle of the sea, and a lot of movement from the people. There are many things happening at the same time, planes landing, taking off, people moving big stuff around, and a lot of noises that are well mixed-up with the music, which is energetic. From this opening, I could identify that action openings include scenes with lot of noises, and with a lot of stuff happening at the same time… This gives a sense of chaos, which leads to action, and the abrupt noises, help exaggerating what’s happening, and makes it seem more “dangerous” than what it really is. This opening is also really acclaimed because it was the remake of the old version, made in 1986, and the editors made a great job, and made the opening look really similar, and they achieved an amazing result.
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966)
Another action film opening that I’m going to be discussing is from “The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly” (1966), and even though this is a really old film, its opening is really good. It is directed by Sergio Leone, an Italian filmmaker known for developing the genre. This opening introduces the 3 main characters, and the antagonist, and without words, it makes the audience know a lot about them, for example, that the 3 characters shown at first are not happy, but kind of sad, and that they are or were friends. Also that they planned what is going to happen (shooting the house). This is something that I liked a lot, and I would LOVE being able to make my opening similar in that way, that with no or little words, the audience interprets that much, and for them to get a second meaning, or a more developed one of the story. I also really liked the sound of this film, I felt that it didn’t have much, but that the foley sounds were really good and they matched perfectly with what was happening.
The Hunger Games (2008)
The last opening that I would like to discuss is from the film “The Hunger Games” (2008). This film is a dystopian fiction in where there are 13 districts, and each year, 2 members from each district must go to survive and fight against each other, and the last to remain alive, wins. The opening starts with two characters, one of them with blu hir, and it’s a colorful scene, with creative appearances. This characters seem to be important, this is shown because they have a peculiar appearance, and it’s also shown that they are presenting a TV show, or something like that. The setting changes when one of these guys asks the other, “What defines your personal signature?” Which is followed by screams coming from a little girl who is on a house in the woods, and the words “DISTRICT 12”, indicating that this is not a memory, but that is happening in other place. The lightning used has a los of cold colors, and it does not have much light. From this opening, I liked the lightning and how the colors represented specific things
That's it for today bloggers, see you on the next one!! :)
